Galvanized Steel Pipe

Common in homes built through the 1950s and 1960s, galvanized pipe is steel coated in zinc. The zinc erodes over the decades, the exposed steel rusts, and the rust builds up inside the pipe. That buildup is what causes the slow pressure loss and the brown or rust-tinged water many older homes deal with. Because the corrosion happens from the inside, a galvanized system can look fine on the outside while it is closing itself off internally. Once one section fails, the rest is usually not far behind.

Polybutylene Pipe

Installed widely between the late 1970s and the mid 1990s, polybutylene is a gray plastic pipe, sometimes blue or black, that was used in millions of homes before its failure rate became clear.
